✦Resident Return Visas (RRV)

A Resident Return Visa (RRV) allows Australian permanent residents and certain former Australian citizens to travel overseas and return to Australia after the travel facility attached to their permanent visa has expired.

Although Australian permanent residence itself does not expire, the travel facility attached to most permanent visas is generally valid for five years. Once that travel facility expires, an eligible person must obtain a Resident Return Visa before returning to Australia as a permanent resident.

Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155)

The Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155) generally provides a travel facility of up to five years, allowing unlimited travel to and from Australia during the period of validity.

This visa is generally available to permanent residents and former Australian citizens who: ✦ have spent at least two years in Australia as a permanent resident during the five years immediately before applying; or ✦ can demonstrate substantial ties of benefit to Australia, together with compelling reasons for any extended absence from Australia.

Substantial ties may include business, employment, cultural, or personal connections to Australia.

Resident Return Visa (Subclass 157)

The Resident Return Visa (Subclass 157) provides a shorter travel facility, generally valid for three months.

It is intended for permanent residents who do not meet the residence requirements for a Subclass 155 visa but have compelling and compassionate reasons for their absence from Australia.

This visa generally permits a single return to Australia within its period of validity.

Demonstrating Your Ties to Australia

Where the residence requirement has not been met, the Department of Home Affairs will carefully assess the applicant's ongoing connection to Australia. Relevant factors may include:

✦family members living in Australia, particularly Australian citizen or permanent resident spouses or children;
✦business or investment interests in Australia;
✦ownership of property or other assets in Australia;
✦employment or professional connections;
✦cultural, community, or social involvement; and
✦evidence of an intention to continue living in Australia.

Strong supporting evidence is often essential where an applicant has spent significant time overseas.
