The Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) allows eligible individuals to travel to Australia temporarily for tourism, visiting family or friends, or approved short-term business visitor activities.

Visitor Visa holders are not permitted to work in Australia and may generally study for up to three months. Depending on the applicant's circumstances, visas may be granted for stays of three, six, or twelve months, and may allow either single or multiple entries.

The Three Main Streams

Tourist stream

The Tourist Stream is designed for people travelling to Australia for holidays, sightseeing, recreation, or to visit family and friends. Applications may generally be lodged from either outside Australia or, in some circumstances, from within Australia.

Business Visitor stream

The Business Visitor Stream allows short-term business visitor activities such as attending meetings, conferences, negotiations, or exploratory business visits. This visa does not permit employment or the provision of services to an Australian business or client. Supporting documents, including an invitation letter from the Australian host organisation, may strengthen the application.

How the Department Assesses a Genuine Visitor

One of the most important requirements for a Visitor Visa is demonstrating that you are a genuine temporary visitor. The Department of Home Affairs carefully considers several factors, including:

1. Ties to Your Home Country

Evidence of employment, business interests, property ownership, ongoing studies, or close family commitments can demonstrate your intention to return home after your visit.

2. Financial Capacity

Applicants should demonstrate that they—or their Australian host—have sufficient financial resources to support the visit. Evidence commonly includes recent bank statements, employment income, or financial support documents.

3. Immigration and Travel History

A history of complying with visa conditions in Australia and other countries supports an application. Previous visa refusals, cancellations, or immigration compliance issues may receive closer scrutiny and should be addressed openly.

4. Purpose of the Visit

Your stated purpose of travel should be genuine, consistent, and supported by appropriate evidence such as travel itineraries, invitation letters, accommodation arrangements, or family circumstances.

Condition 8503 (No Further Stay)

Many Visitor Visas are granted with Condition 8503, commonly known as the No Further Stay condition.

Where this condition applies, the visa holder is generally prevented from applying for most other visas while remaining in Australia. A waiver may only be available where compelling and compassionate circumstances, beyond the visa holder's control, arise after the visa is granted and result in a major change in circumstances. Applications to waive Condition 8503 require careful preparation and strong supporting evidence.
